Accommodations For Emotional Support Animals(ESA) & Psychiatric Service Dogs(PSD)
Individuals who have been prescribed ESAs are provided with certain accommodations under federal law for housing. The Fair Housing Act includes ESAs in its definition of assistance animals. Under the act, people cannot be discriminated against due to a disability, including emotional or psychiatric disabilities, when obtaining housing. Rules such as pet bans or restrictions are waived for people who have a prescription for an ESA. You cannot be charged a pet fee or pet deposit for having your ESA live in your home with you.
The Air Carrier Access Act requires service dogs to accompany their handlers in the cabin of an aircraft. The airline can require documentation from a Behavioral Health Professional stating that the passenger has a disability, along with the reason why your Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) must travel in the cabin with you. If you intend to travel with an PSD, contact the airline ahead of time to ensure that you have all of the appropriate paperwork.
ESAs can be any common domestic animal including dogs, cats, ferrets, and more. To qualify, the animal must be reasonably well behaved and under the control of its handler at all times. The ESA must also be housebroken and cannot be a danger to others.
